Choosing the right forming process for your part

Formed and extruded components are not one process. Extrusion suits continuous cross-sections, thermoforming suits large panels, trays and shells, blow molding suits hollow containers and bottles, and rotational molding suits tanks and thick-wall hollow parts. Plasticpartsmfg helps procurement and engineering teams match geometry, wall thickness, tooling investment and batch size to the most cost-effective route.

Extruded Profiles & Tubing

Continuous production of custom cross-sections in rigid or flexible plastics. Best for sealing, conveyor, edge trim, structural rails and fluid or air tubing where length is cut to order.

Tooling: extrusion die

Thermoformed Trays, Panels & Shells

Large-format forming over a mold for enclosures, machine covers, packaging trays and structural panels. Good for low to medium volume before committing to injection molding tooling.

Tooling: forming mold

Blow Molded Containers & Bottles

Hollow parts with uniform wall distribution for chemical, industrial and equipment consumable applications. Suited to repeat production runs and larger order quantities.

Tooling: blow mold

Rotomolded Tanks & Large Housings

Seamless, stress-free hollow parts with thick walls for tanks, bins and outdoor housings. Economical at low volume where injection molding tooling would be too costly.

Tooling: rotomold

Secondary Operations

Cutting, CNC trimming, drilling, punching, bonding, welding, printing, painting and assembly are handled in-house so parts arrive ready for your line.

Finishing & assembly

Low Volume to Production

Start with prototype or bridge quantities, then scale the same design into repeat production. Plasticpartsmfg supports the transition without changing suppliers.

Cost logic: tooling, batch size and wall thickness

Formed and extruded parts carry different economics from machined or injection molded components. Tooling is usually simpler and lower cost, which makes low-volume and bridge production viable, but unit cost depends strongly on wall thickness, part size, material and the amount of secondary work required.

  • Tooling investment: extrusion dies, forming molds, blow molds and rotomolds are quoted per project. Simple profiles and trays need less tooling than complex shells or large tanks.
  • Batch thresholds: extrusion and thermoforming are economical from low volumes; blow molding and rotational molding become more cost-effective as quantities increase.
  • Wall thickness and size: thicker walls and larger parts increase cycle time and material usage, which directly affects unit price.
  • Secondary operations: cutting, drilling, bonding and assembly add labor and fixturing. We quote these transparently so you can compare total landed cost.
